Enzootic abortion is caused by infection during pregnancy with the Chlamydophila organism derived from infected birth fluids and placentas from recently or latently infected sheep.
CLINICAL SIGNS:
- Abortion typically occurs in the last 2–3 weeks of pregnancy.
- Ewes often show no signs of illness.
- Placentas are thickened and covered with a gray-brown exudate.
- Affected flocks may experience abortion storms, especially in naïve animals.
WHAT CAN YOU DO:
-
Vaccination: Inactivated or live attenuated vaccines are available. Read more here: Enzo and Imneva A5 Stuffer
-
Biosecurity: Minimize exposure to contaminated birthing materials.
-
Antibiotics (e.g., long-acting oxytetracycline) can reduce but not eliminate shedding.
